Brilliant Knit Beads is an intelligently structured class, excellently taught.
Essential Techniques Every Knitter Should KnowBy Lucy Neatby
Sally offers a lifetime of knitting experience in this class. Lots of useful tips and tricks are covered. The material she covers parallels some of which I cover in my Knitting Essentials 1 and 2 DVDs. It was fascinating to me to see how she and I differed in our emphasis in covering similar material! We, as teachers, all have our passions and opinions, and students benefit from the exposure to different styles and methods. I enjoyed her explanations of why she favours one method over another, even if I did not always agree. I concur with her validation of the importance of seams and finishing!
I was astonished to find that Sally does not think much of short rows in shoulders, and she takes a more seamstress-like approach to joining them, too. One thing I feel I must comment on is her approach to setting in sleeves. I wholeheartedly agree with her process until the moment she places her needle in the sleeve fabric. The position of the sewn stitch in the fabric of the sleeve is, in my opinion, just wrong. It will work, but it will not make the stitches happy; if you were to remove the unnecessary bound-off edge from the top of the sleeve, the sleeve would fall away. It is possible that this was an oversight, as it is not always possible to see clearly what you are doing when your are positioning your hands and the project for filming purposes.
Check out this class for some Sally specialities such as her method of tightening a bound-off edge, a variation of a Crochet Cast-On and how to remove the slip knot, and her neat approach to seaming garter and seed stitches. A class worth watching: you will know some of the techniques and discover others new to you, and enjoy her explanations of why things work.
