Tancook Tractor Taxi

Dear Knitters,

Rethinking My Summer
Broken Wrist I'm afraid this is going to be a shorter edition than usual, owing to my having fallen off my bike recently and broken my right wrist. This spells disaster for an avid knitter, designer, quilter and blogger!

My summer plans have been drastically curtailed. Among other things, I had been enjoying my daily bike ride, particularly during this beautiful Nova Scotian summer. As this is no longer doable, I find myself imagining alternatives--should I take up unicycling, or is a recumbent speed-tricycle more my thing? Needless to say, John is not taken with either option... rollerblades then?

Introducing Fiona
meet Fiona I was excited to take possession of my new tractor last week. My son and his girlfriend had fixed her up for my use on Tancook, but sadly, thanks again to the broken wrist, Fiona's first trip from the ferry to my little house was not chauffeured by me. Cherrie, who had so lovingly painted her in gorgeous shades of lavender and purple, got that honour. What a colourful sight met the inhabitants of Big Tancook Island--purple Fiona, loaded down with a borrowed yellow kayak, and hauling two bright deckchairs in her passenger/luggage compartment! She didn't leave anyone in doubt as to whose house she was heading toward!

That Tancook Wildlife!
Seagull Thief Speaking of Tancook, do you remember the incident with the seagull last year? This bird of exceptionally fine taste made off scot-free with a skein of Curious Creek Omo Wool/Silk yarn. Since then some of us here have been wondering whatever became of it... did it line a luxurious nest or end up in Davy Jones' locker? We can now reveal what was discovered when Hillary happened to be out fishing with a friend this spring. Here is the full story.

Limited Edition Designer Kits
Yummy Zen Mountain Scarf We have received our first shipment of Yummy Yarns kits. They feature 2 cakes of 100 grams dk weight Merino Superwash wool in contrasting blues and the pattern for the Zen Mountain Scarf. As we wait to add these Limited Edition Kits to the website(which requires a fair amount of coding and testing), feel free to order your own $55.00 kit directly via email or phone. The Zen Mountain Scarf truly is yummy in this yarn!

Teaching Plans for the Fall
This coming October, I will be offering a day of workshops at the Nova Scotia Fibre Arts Festival in Amherst, NS. If you are in the neighbourhood, please don't miss this event; there will be many wonderful textile artists there. As a matter of fact, I will be busily teaching from coast to coast from September to November; check my Workshops page to see if I'll be knitting near you!

Fiona's haul
Happy Summer Stitches,

P.S. I'm happy to report that my wrist is healing nicely. A week after the accident, my original cast was replaced with a smaller, snazzy pink one. My fingers feel much freer--I've even taken Fiona out around the island(kept things nice and slow)! Believe it or not, I am even considering picking up some knitting needles before too long!

Knitting Tip

Exercise Your Yarn!

Kauni Effektgarn

Try and take some time to keep your yarn fit and healthy (and free of unwanted visitors/residents). Over the summer I try to review both my stock and personal stash by emptying all storage bins and checking over the yarns. I dust, sort and refresh the cedar balls. Not only do the legs get some exercise (carrying boxes to and from the basement), but I also renew my acquaintance with old friends. By the end of the day, however, I will be suffering with a million new design ideas all clamouring for my attention!
Don't be afraid to move any yarns that no longer appeal to you along to a new home, there are many good causes or friends who would be glad to help you out. This could be good time to propose a guild yarn swap!

July Pattern Offer

Superhero Hat

Although it still seems far in the future, some of us knitters find ourselves thinking about Christmas a bit earlier than most. With that in mind, and also because this really is a great knit, we are offering a more decidedly wintry pattern as this month's special.
Knit in 2 contrasting fingering-weight yarns, such as our own Celestial Merino or Cat's Pajamas yarns, the Super-Hero Hat is a great introduction to shaped double-knitting and results in an exceptionally warm and stylish hat for the Super-Hero in your life!
My newest Youtube tutorial, Simulated Knit-in-the-Round Swatching Technique, will help you on your way!
For this week only, get the Superhero Hat pattern for $3.50 instead of our usual $7.00 price. This offer ends on August 3, 2012.

Summer Holidays

The office will be closed for vacations from August 4th to 13th. E-mails and phone calls will not be answered during that time, but if you leave a message, we will get back to you upon our return. We apologize for any inconvenience, but promise that a well-rested staff will be at the ready to help you with your knitting needs as of August 13th.

Happy Stitches and Warm Summer Wishes!
